How to Make 3000×3000 Album Art — Measured File Size and Upscaling

What steps should you follow?

• Load a PNG, JPEG or WebP image into the album art resizer. The image is processed in your browser only.
• Drag the square crop box to frame the area you want. If the original is smaller than 3000×3000, a quality warning appears.
• Choose output sizes (3000×3000, 1500×1500, 1400×1400, 1280×720, 1080×1080) and add custom sizes if needed.
• Press Resize all, then download files one by one or as a ZIP. Every size is saved as JPEG (quality 0.92).
• Before uploading, check the size, format and file limits required by your distributor or platform.

How large are the files?

With identical settings, file size varied widely with image content. At 3000×3000, simple flat-colour artwork came to 184 KB, while a photo-like image with per-pixel variation came to 3,939 KB (measured 2026-10-01 in Chrome 152).

What happens if a 3000×3000 file exceeds 4 MB?

For 3000×3000 the resizer keeps files under 4 MiB (4,194,304 bytes): if a file is larger, it re-saves at JPEG quality 0.85, 0.80, 0.75 and then 0.70. The photo-like test image exceeded 4 MiB at 0.92 and 0.85 and fit at 0.80 with 3,939 KB (measured 2026-10-01). Other sizes have no cap.

An image still over 4 MiB at 0.70 is saved at that size, so check the file size shown in the download list.

Does enlarging a small image to 3000 px make it sharper?

No. When a detailed 3000 px test image was reduced and then enlarged back to 3000 px, detail measured as neighbouring-pixel difference fell to 11% from 1000 px, 28% from 1500 px and 51% from 2000 px (measured 2026-10-01). The output becomes 3000×3000, but no detail is added that the original lacked.

The test image combines per-pixel noise with thin lines every 12 px, an extremely detailed case. Artwork with large flat areas shows much less difference when enlarged, but it still gains no detail that was not in the original.

How is 1280×720 cropped?

Non-square sizes such as 1280×720 take a 16:9 slice from the centre of the square crop, which is 56% of its height. Text or faces near the top or bottom edge may be cut off, so check the preview.

How we measured

• Processing path: the same steps as the album art resizer (OffscreenCanvas, high-quality smoothing, JPEG quality 0.92, and for 3000×3000 a 4 MiB cap with quality steps 0.85→0.70), run in Chrome 152. JPEG encoders differ between browsers, so file sizes may differ elsewhere.
• Test images: 3000×3000 images synthesized by us. Simple artwork is a circle, a bar and large text on a gradient; the photo-like image adds per-pixel noise and thin lines every 12 px to a gradient.
• Detail: the mean brightness difference between horizontally adjacent pixels, compared with the 3000 px original. PSNR was computed from the pixel difference between the enlarged result and the original.
